When we decide to pivot and carve out our own path there’s a period of adjustment as we say to people whose opinions matter to us: I’m not going to be the person you thought I was. I’m not going to take the path you hoped I would take.
In choosing freedom, we are choosing anxiety, because we can't see the pathway, we can't predict the outcome.
Feeling some anxiety is normal, but not comfortable.
There are periods where we bravely take action and cast our work out into the world. Then we have the anxious wait about how people will react to it, whether they will react to it at all, and how we'll react to their reaction.
We create things worth sharing, and then doubt their value, and experience the resistance of putting it out there.
We wake in the wee hours worrying about how much money is going out, and whether enough will come back in.
When it all gets too uncomfortable we dip back into safety. To remove the anxiety we opt-in to things that are practical, measurable, predictable. We put the responsibility onto a mentor, author, or training course to tell us what to do. We stop developing our content for a period while we dither about who we are, what we’re doing and why. While we wonder if it’s all worth it, and if we've got what it takes.
But after a time this 'safety' is stifling. It reminds us why we decided to carve out our own path in the first place. We begin to take action again almost out of rebellion rather than courage.
We choose to chase the more fulfilling, the more meaningful, the more challenging, the more demanding.
We choose the anxiety.
We choose to wake up in the middle of the night worrying. It's a shit sandwich we are willing to eat. We do it for ourselves, we do it to set an example for our children, we do it to make a difference in the world.
There is power in remembering that this was our choice. That we get to do this.
